Privacy Policy
Last updated: 10 July 2026
This policy explains what 墨墨中文 Mòmò Chinese collects, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We have tried to write it in plain English and to describe only what the app actually does.
墨墨中文 Mòmò Chinese ("Mòmò", "we", "us") is a Mandarin learning app run by a small Australian business. Because we operate from Australia, we handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). If you are in the EU, the UK, or elsewhere, we aim to give you the equivalent access, correction, and deletion rights described below.
Who this policy covers
It covers everyone who uses the app: learners with an account, people who join the waitlist, and teachers and students who use the teacher features. The app is currently invite-only.
What we collect
Your account
We sign you in with your email address and a one-time code (a passwordless "OTP" login, so we never store a password). Sign-in and accounts are handled by our cloud hosting and database provider. You can add an optional display name.
Your learning data
Your progress is stored as your own record in our database: your decks and cards, review history and scheduling, streaks and stats, Coach notes, your chosen avatar, and your settings. This is the core of the product, so we keep it for as long as your account exists. Access is restricted so that, in normal use, only you (and any teacher you have explicitly linked) can read it.
Teacher and student sharing
If you invite a teacher (or are added by one), we create a link between the two accounts. You control exactly what that teacher can see through per-link scopes: your progress, your Coach diagnosis, and which of your personal decks are shared. Sharing is off or narrow by default for the sensitive parts, and you can change the scopes or revoke the link at any time in Settings. Teachers can also send you cards, which land in your inbox for you to accept or decline.
Card and lesson content sent to AI
When you use the card generator, the Coach, or other AI features, only the specific content involved in that request is sent for AI processing, for example a sentence you paste, a word you are studying, or the trouble cards the Coach is diagnosing when you open it. We do not send your whole study history. This always goes through our own authenticated server, never directly from your browser to a third party.
Audio
When you ask for audio, the text to be spoken is sent to a speech synthesis (text to speech) provider to generate the voice. Audio is cached to avoid re-generating the same clip.
Analytics and session recording
We use a product analytics provider, hosted in the European Union, to understand how the app is used so we can improve it. Analytics requests are routed through our own domain.
- Product analytics. We record events such as which screens you open and which features you use, along with basic technical information. For signed-in users, we attach your email address to your analytics profile so we can see which account a session belongs to. If you would rather we did not, you can turn analytics off (see "Your choices" below), and we will stop sending analytics entirely.
- Session recording (replay). This is off by default. It never runs on the sign-in screen and never runs before you are signed in. It only starts after you have signed in and acknowledged the on-screen recording notice, and it stops when you sign out. Turning analytics off also stops any recording.
- We scrub email addresses out of error reports before they leave your device.
Email we send you
We use an email delivery provider to send account email such as your welcome or invite message, a waitlist acknowledgement, and a note when we reply to feedback you have sent. You can turn off the "email me when we reply" notification in Settings.
Waitlist and feedback
If you register interest on our site, we store your email address and name, and (to prevent abuse of the form) your IP address and browser user agent. If you send feedback, we store your message, your email, and some context about where in the app you were.
How we use your information
- To run the app: sign you in, save and sync your learning progress, and power the AI and audio features.
- To support the teacher and student features you choose to use.
- To understand and improve the product through analytics (unless you opt out).
- To communicate with you about your account and your feedback.
- To keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We use trusted third-party service providers to help us run Mòmò, and we share information with them only as needed to do their specific job:
| Category | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Cloud hosting and database storage | Runs the app and stores your account and learning data |
| AI processing | Generates and explains the card and lesson content you ask for |
| Speech synthesis (text to speech) | Turns text into spoken audio |
| Product analytics | Understands how the app is used and, when enabled, session recording (hosted in the European Union) |
| Email delivery | Sends account and notification email |
| Bot protection | Bot check on the waitlist form (landing page only, when active) |
These providers process data on our behalf under their own terms and security practices. We may also disclose information if the law requires it. As a small product still in beta, the specific providers behind these categories may change over time; if a change is material to how your data is handled, we will update this policy and the date at the top.
Local storage and cookies
The app stores your sign-in session and your settings in your browser's local storage so it works smoothly and remembers you. Analytics uses cookies or similar storage; turning analytics off stops it.
Where your data is held
We are based in Australia, and our providers store and process data in various regions, including the EU and the United States. Where personal information is transferred overseas, we rely on our providers' safeguards for that transfer.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account (see below), we remove it. We are still finalizing a formal retention schedule for supporting records (such as analytics events, waitlist entries, and feedback), and we will keep this section updated as those windows are settled.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction. You can view and edit your profile and learning data in the app. For anything else, contact us.
- Delete your account. You can delete your account yourself in Settings, under Data & backup. This permanently removes your account and your learning data, your teacher and student links, your cards sent and received, and your analytics events. We also attempt to remove your analytics profile and any recordings. For honesty: feedback you have submitted keeps its message text but is de-linked from your account (your email is disconnected from it).
- Turn off analytics. In Settings, under Data & backup, then Privacy, you can turn "Share usage analytics" off. When off, we send no analytics events and start no recording, and the choice syncs to your other devices.
- Export. You can export your cards as a spreadsheet (CSV) from Settings. If you would like a copy of other data we hold about you, contact us.
- Email preferences. You can turn off feedback-reply notifications in Settings.
If you are in the EU, the UK, or another region with data protection rights, you have equivalent rights to access, correct, delete, and object to processing. Contact us and we will help.
Children
Mòmò is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information without appropriate consent. If we begin working with schools or universities where younger students are involved, we will put suitable arrangements in place first.
Security
Data is encrypted in transit, and access to your records is restricted by database-level security rules so that no other user can read your data: only you, any teacher you have explicitly linked (within the scopes you set), and our own administration for support and abuse prevention. Sign-in uses one-time codes, so there is no password to steal. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. When we make a significant change, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
